The Rio Lobo Ranch is located in high plains of eastern Colorado. It is 122 acres of beautiful prairie pasture land. There is a mostly dry creek bed that cuts through the length of the property, lined on both sides by some of the most amazing cottonwoods I've ever seen. I don't doubt that many of the trees are well over 50 years old and more likely closer to 100 years old.
From what I understand, the original ranch was a cattle ranch and some what larger. We are in Elbert county, approximately 35 miles southeast of Denver and about 15 miles north and a bit west of the town center of Elizabeth. In summary, we are 3 miles down a dirt road and while our mailing address is Elizabeth we live in "darn near Kansas".
Birds. The birds are amazing. We have a pair of nesting hawks. At least two pair of nesting owls. Flickers and Orioles and Finches and Meadow larks and Swallows and Dove and some kind of dark colored birds that follow the horses around. And last summer we had a duck that built a nest and hatched ducklings. The interesting part is that she built the nest on the edge of the hay field. The closest water was / is a pond over the ridge or the holding pond by the corral equally distant from her nest site.
There are deer and antelope and bunnies and coyotes. We have a creek cat (see Tux information detailed under Cats and Kittens).
It is our landlord's and our goal to preserve this space and to take care of the land and the creatures that live here. To be good stewards of the land.
It is peaceful and quiet and without the glow of city lights, the stars are incredibly bright.
It is a very very good place to be -- Which is a good thing cause sometimes when it rains and/or snows - getting out the driveway and down the dirt road can be a bit dicey.....
